Plastic Recycling in Playa Saladita

Empowering Local Action to Protect Our Coastline

As part of the Plastic Recycling in Playa La Saladita initiative, Proyecto Saladita has strategically placed 39 collection bins throughout Playa Saladita, The pueblo of Saladita, Barra Saladita and neighboring Los Llanos. These locations were selected based on population density and plastic accumulation points near the river mouth, helping reduce waste where it matters most.

Program Details:

• Bin Placement: Bins are located to maximize accessibility and convenience for residents and visitors. We continuously monitor usage, placement effectiveness, and fill rates to optimize our collection system.

• Collection and Processing: Proyecto Saladita conducts monthly pickups to ensure timely removal of plastic waste from the environment. Collected plastic is transported to our partner organization in Zihuatanejo, which manages further processing in the recycling chain. We also support beach cleanups where we can provide larger, more appropriate receptacles for events if we’re given a notice ahead of the event.

• Expansion Plans: As part of our commitment to this effort, we plan to expand our bin network to additional strategic locations. This expansion aims to enhance coverage and increase community engagement in sustainable practices.

• Community Impact: By diverting plastic waste from traditional waste streams, we contribute to cleaner beaches, healthier ecosystems, and reduced environmental pollution. We encourage community involvement and awareness in waste management practices. Stay tuned for performance metrics and the progress we are making!
